HONG KONG, China (Dec 1, 2024) - The second day of the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong, China saw more thrilling competition and a further eight gold medals decided, five of which went to Korea.
There was once again a fervent atmosphere at the Hong Kong Coliseum, as the world’s best Poomsae Taekwondo athletes sought glory on the highest stage.
China were the first winners of the day, Sitong Lin delivering a stunning performance in the Freestyle Poomsae Female Under 17 final to claim her country’s first gold of the Championships. Her compatriot Yuxiang Zhu soon delivered a second with his victory in the Recognised Poomsae Male Under 40.
It completed a full set of individual medals at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships for Zhu, who was bronze medallist in the Junior category at Cairo 2009 and silver medallist at Under 30 level at Lima 2016.
Korea followed their two gold medals on day one with a further five today. Sung Hoi Kim triumphed in the Male Under 60 category, while Hana Lee triumphed in the Female Under 40 and Sang Woo Kim in the Male Under 30.
The Korean team also emerged victorious in the Female Team Under 30 event, and a fruitful day was rounded off with a sublime display from Jaeyoung Byeon in the Freestyle Poomsae Male Under 17 final.
Byeon rose to the challenge of competing last as the top performer from the semi-finals, dazzling the crowd with his flips and kicks to seal the final gold medal of day two.
The day’s other gold medallist was Kathy Do of the United States of America, who was the winner of the Female Under 50 event.
The World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships continues with day three tomorrow, and concludes on Wednesday 4 December.
