From Azraq to black belts

AMMAN, Jordan (Nov. 7, 2024) - The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) project in the refugee camp of Azraq is running since 2016 and has shown significant results through the Humanitarian Sport Center achieved in 2018, where children can enjoy sports activities and education.

So far, 500 refugee children experienced Taekwondo at the camp. Despite the difficult realities, Azraq’s young refugee athletes continue to hone their kicks, train their bodies and minds every day and most importantly, find joy from it.

In 2023, THF Academy in Azraq passed the mark of 100 black belts.

Thanks to the hard work and passion of the athletes, 23 new champions have earned their black belts, reaching now 123.

Among them, Doaa, 9, is a child prodigy in Taekwondo who became the youngest refugee Taekwondo practitioner to earn her first-dan black belt at the age of six in 2021.

She acquired her second dan at the age of 8 and was offered the possibility to compete for the first time out of Jordan.

Others came to the light, starting to compete at national Jordan level, participating in two tournaments (Al Fares Taekwondo Championships and the Brave Championships), in Amman, early this year.

The team, made of 20 athletes, won 13 medals and has been awarded the first-place cup in the men’s category.

The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation offers refugees and displaced persons the self-confidence, self-belief and self-defense benefits of Taekwondo – a sport that can be practiced by anyone, anywhere, without any special equipment.
