PARIS, France (Aug. 12, 2024) - World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue today praised the great success of the Paris 2024 Olympic Taekwondo competition which was among the very best ever held.

 

The Games concluded on August 11 with a spectacular Closing Ceremony which featured 23 Taekwondo flag bearers from 21 National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

 

The Taekwondo competition took place on August 7-10 in the iconic Grand Palais, arguably the most stunning venue for Taekwondo in the competition’s history. On each of the four days, the temporary venue’s 8,000 seats were sold out reflecting the huge demand from the public to get a glimpse of the world’s best Taekwondo athletes in this historic setting.

 

A total of 134 athletes from 60 NOCs, Olympic Refugee Team (EOR) and Individual Neutral Athlete (AIN) competed across the eight Olympic weight categories (four men and four women). The eight gold medals were shared between seven different counties and 23 nations won at least one of the 32 medals available in a testament to the global strength of Taekwondo.

 

Between Sessions the award-winning World Taekwondo Demonstration Team kept the crowds entertained with their gravity-defying performances and Mixed Gender Team showcases were held.

 

World Taekwondo President Choue said:

“We commend all our athletes for delivering thrilling matches and an unforgettable Olympic Taekwondo competition. The sold-out Grand Palais provided a spectacular backdrop for tense finishes, jaw-dropping techniques and incredible performances.

 

“Paris 2024 was the ultimate showcase of Taekwondo and demonstrated why it is so popular around the world, not just for its sporting entertainment but its display of sportsmanship and the Olympic values.

 

“We are grateful to the Paris 2024 Organising Committee, City of Paris, the volunteers and all the fans for making this competition such a success. We can still hear La Marseillaise reverberating around the historic Grand Palais’ walls following Althea Laurin’s historic gold and the iconic chant of Allez Les Bleus continues to ring in our ears, but what made Paris 2024 so special was that this was not just a Games for French athletes but one in which the crowds embraced all athletes, in every session, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that our athletes will never forget.”

 

The fans at the venue were also able to experience the sport for themselves as they took part in the Virtual Taekwondo booths.
