CHUNCHEON, Korea (Jul. 3, 2024) - China claimed the mixed gender honours on day three of the World Taekwondo World Cup Team Championships Series in Chuncheon, Korea.

 

Mixed gender teams comprised of two male athletes with a combined weight up to 160kg and two female athletes with a combined weight up to 135kg, and the six competing nations delivered a closely-fought competition at the Air Dome at Song-Am Sports Town.

 

China edged out Iran in the final, earning $10,000 in prize money and denying their opponents a World Cup Team Championships Series treble after their successes in the male and female events.

 

China had beaten Morocco and India earlier in the day, while Iran – who took $7,000 in prize money – won their semi-final against the hosts Korea.

 

Korea had won their first match against Côte d'Ivoire, and defeated India to earn the bronze medal and $5,000 in prize money.

 

A total of 69 athletes from the six countries competed across the three days of the World Cup Team Championships Series, but it is just the start of an exciting week of events in Chuncheon.

 

World Taekwondo President Dr. Chungwon Choue and Secretary General Jeongkang Seo were joined by the Mayor of Chuncheon Dong Han Yook, WT Vice President and Asian Taekwondo Union President Kyuseok Lee, WT Council member and Korea Taekwondo Association President Jinbang Yang, WT Council member Kook hyun Jung and Kukkiwon President Dong Sup Lee at today’s Opening Ceremony.

 

President Choue expressed his gratitude to Gangwon State, Chuncheon City and the Organising Committee for their work staging the events, and underlined World Taekwondo’s commitment to innovation to help continue the sport’s growth.

 

“Dynamic and action-packed team competitions displayed for the past three days demonstrate the continued innovation of Taekwondo,” President Choue said.

 

“This continued evolution of Taekwondo, embracing all generations, is recognized and respected by the IOC and entire sport communities together with our contributions to peace-building through Taekwondo.

 

 

“Taekwondo is growing as such and I hope that Chuncheon will continue playing an important role in the development and promotion of Taekwondo.”

 

Events continue in Chuncheon tomorrow with the World Taekwondo Demonstration & Breaking Championships, followed by the World Para Taekwondo Open Challenge on Friday (July 5).
