Spotlight on Chuncheon for trio of World Taekwondo events

 

CHUNCHEON, Korea (Jun. 30, 2024) - Chuncheon, Korea, will host a trio of World Taekwondo events from 1-5 July, featuring around 200 athletes from 40 countries including Refugee Team and AIN.

 

The World Taekwondo World Cup Team Championships Series will begin the week-long showcase of Taekwondo from July 1-3, followed by the World Taekwondo Demonstration & Breaking Championships on July 4 and the World Para Taekwondo Open Challenge on July 5.

 

There are three senior competitions being held as part of the World Taekwondo World Cup Team Championships Series: a male event on July 1, female event on July 2 and mixed gender event on July 3. Male and female teams comprise of three athletes with maximum combined weights of 240kg and 200kg respectively, while mixed gender teams are made up of two male athletes with a combined weight up to 160kg and two female athletes with a combined weight up to 135kg.

 

The male and female events are being played under the best of three system, with each round carried out using the tag match format. Contests in the mixed team event feature a four-minute first round in a traditional one-on-one match format, and second and third rounds in the tag match format.

 

For the World Taekwondo Demonstration & Breaking Championships, there are male and female events in the jumping multiple kick, vertical spinning kick and free style breaking categories in individual breaking, and demonstration performances are divided into domestic and international competition.

 

The World Para Taekwondo Open Challenge will be held in a single elimination tournament system, and feature five weight categories for male and female athletes in the K44 sport class: -58kg, -63kg, -70kg, -80kg and +80kg male events, and -47kg, -52kg, -57kg, -65kg and +65kg female events.

 

All events are taking place at Song-Am Sports Town, and will demonstrate Taekwondo’s inclusivity and accessibility.
