World Taekwondo observes International Day of Peace

The World Taekwondo family will come together to mark the International Day of Peace and promote the important role that sport can play in contributing to more peaceful communities.

The International Day of Peace is celebrated every year on September 21st and was proposed by Costa Rica to the United Nations in 1981, after it was first suggested by World Taekwondo Chungwon Choue’s late father Dr. Youngseek Choue in the same year.

The theme this year is ‘Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals.’ It is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will create a culture of peace for all.

Promoting peace and peaceful competition is at the very heart of World Taekwondo. Through its numerous humanitarian initiatives, including the launch of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, World Taekwondo has demonstrated how Taekwondo can bring people together and encourage greater tolerance and respect among and within communities.

As World Taekwondo says, Peace in Mind, Taekwondo at Heart!
