SOFIA, Bulgaria (May 5, 2021) - Some of Europe’s best Taekwondo athletes are set to battle it out for the final Tokyo 2020 qualification places at the European Qualification Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria on 7-8 May.
A total of 120 athletes from 39 countries plus one Refugee team will compete at the Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia in the two-day competition. The Refugee team will comprise six athletes (four male and two female) reflecting the accessibility of the sport and the important role it continues to play in empowering refugees.
On 6 May the Head of Team Meeting and official draw will take place. On 7 May, athletes in the women’s -49kg and -67kg and men’s -58kg and -80kg will compete for gold and those all-important Olympic places. The following day it will be the turn of the women’s -57kg and +67kg and men’s -68kg and +80kg categories. The Paralympic Qualification Tournament will take place on 9 May.
The Tournament is promoted by Taekwondo Europe and organized by in Taekwondo Bulgaria and relevant authorities will be implement robust COVID-19 protocols to protect the health of all participants.
The European Qualification Tournament is the penultimate Continental Qualification Tournament for Tokyo 2020 to take place with the Asian Qualification Tournament scheduled for May 21-23.
