SEOUL, Korea (April 6, 2020) - Members of the World Taekwondo family all around the world today celebrated the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace by holding up the #WhiteCard – the internationally recognized sign of peace.

Despite many countries implementing social distancing measures to protect against the current COVID-19 pandemic, taekwondo athletes, coaches and Member National Associations showed their support for the international day from the safety of their homes.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said:

“At a time when the world is facing a common enemy, it is more important than ever that we unite in solidarity. Sport has rightly taken a back seat during this challenging time; but sport, and those who are involved in it, particularly athletes, can still play an important role in inspiring hope and contributing to overcoming the challenges we all face.

“All our athletes who today have sent in photos of themselves holding white cards, have sent a strong message to the millions of people around the world who follow them that our commitment to a better and more peaceful world remains. They have inspired their fans and reminded them that we are all in this together; we are all affected; this pandemic does not discriminate. Even though many of us are confined to our homes, we can all still continue to support each other and remain connected in unity and peace.”
