World’s best taekwondo athletes ready for spectacular season finale in Moscow

SEOUL, Korea (28 November 2019) - Final preparations are underway in Moscow as the Russian capital readies itself to welcome some of the world’s best athletes for the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final and end-of-season Gala Awards on 6-7 December 2019.

 

128 athletes from 42 countries are expected in the Dynamo Sports Palace for the Grand Prix Final. Competing in eight different weight categories, athletes will be battling out for gold and the last remaining WT Olympic ranking points before Tokyo 2020 qualification places are decided.

 

Athletes will also be showcasing the new competition uniforms which have been designed to be more practical as well as more fan and media friendly for this Final. The World Taekwondo Council will meet on 7 December to decide whether the competition uniforms will be used during Tokyo 2020.

 

GP Final Gala(23.11.2018)-109On the evening of 7 December, the World Taekwondo Gala Awards 2019 will be held at the Lotte Plaza Hotel. It will be the 6th time the ceremony has taken place and once again the male and female athlete of the year will be recognised alongside coach of the year and kick of the year. The male and female referee of the year and the fair play award will also be presented.

 

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said:

 

“We are excited to be returning to Moscow for the Grand Prix Final and Gala Awards which we are sure will provide a fantastic end to the 2019 season. The Grand Prix Final will be particularly significant as it represents the big opportunity to secure vital ranking points ahead of Tokyo 2020 next year. With this added motivation I am sure our athletes will put on a breath-taking show for the thousands of taekwondo-loving fans in the stadium and all those watching at home.

Ahead of the Grand Prix Final, the World Taekwondo Council will meet on 5 December for an Extraordinary Council Meeting.
